Changing for the Better
Isabella was getting off to a rough start in high school, but all that was about to change.
“There was something that just turned in you, and it was so amazing. I'm so proud of you.” Elaine, Isabella’s Big Sister, gushes.
Struggling academically and not doing well at home, signing up for Big Brothers Big Sisters was the furthest thing from Isabella’s mind. "My mom signed me up without asking, and I was super mad”, she confessed. “I didn't want to do it". After meeting her Big Sister Elaine, Isabella began to see the program in a different light. They would meet up to grab a bite to eat, visit a museum, or head out for a bike ride. “It's nice to have somebody who's up for anything” Isabella tells us.
Their bond grew deeper as time went on, and as summer came, Elaine even helped Isabella secure an internship at her company. Isabella’s mom, Nora, started to notice that her once schedule-averse teen was now waking up early to pack lunch and taking initiative in getting to her internship.
Now in her sophomore year, Isabella has done a complete 180. She’s on her school’s basketball team, has a wonderful group of friends, and is getting A’s and B’s in her classes. She says, “I really want to go to a good college, and I want to be successful. I really love school now.”
Isabella credits her transformation to the support she’s had from Elaine. “Elaine really got me excited about school. She was like ‘you're really smart, you can do it, I know you can’”, Isabella tells us. “Everybody needs a role model, Elaine's a big part of my life, and it's a really good thing to have."
