Keep the Cycle Going

San Jose resident Melvin knew he wanted to make a difference in his community. As a 911 EMT, Melvin often saw kids in the neighborhood getting into trouble. “My primary goal was one less kid on the street. Less drugs. Less crime.” He found Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area through his best friend Quinn, who was a Big. In June 2012, he was matched with Justin.

Justin, though a self admitted ‘shy kid’, warmed up to Mel quickly. Both bonded over their love of sports. Together, they went to everything from arena football games, to the Sharks and the A’s. When they’re not cheering on their favorite teams, Mel and Justin head to museums or get outdoors. They even tried their hand at crabbing!

Over the past three years, with Mel’s guidance, Justin has certainly come out of his shell. “Every kid needs a male figure in their life”, Justin tells us. “We don't really have someone to hang out with all the time. Mel kind of filled that place and taught me things I need to know to be successful. I got really lucky with Mel.”

Justin wants to be just like his Big Brother, Mel, even one day becoming a mentor. “It's going to keep the cycle going”, he says with a smile.
