Simple Moments, Strong Bond

"I remember seeing an ad that showed a Big and a Little just hanging out at the Big's office, tossing pencils at the ceiling," Matt, a longtime Big Brother, recalls. "I think I responded to the message that one could make a positive difference in a kid's life even in mundane moments like that."

It's been 13 years since Matt was matched with a shy 6-year-old named Trinidad, who is now grown and headed off to college at the University of San Francisco in the fall, recipient of a special scholarship offered by another former BBBSBA Big Brother. "I was kind of surprised how young six was, how tiny he was," Matt tells us of their first meeting. But over the years, as he's watched Trinidad grow up, their relationship has grown. "Every week we seem to become more like friends and less like an adult and child or mentor/mentee."

Inspirational Match Award in 2009

There are so many moments to remember over this longtime friendship, from the games they've attended to the hikes they've done. But, much like that commercial promised long ago, it's the simple moments that stick out. Trinidad recalls a time they spent skipping rocks as one of his favorite memories, and Matt tells us about when he and Trinidad texted back and forth during the NBA playoffs. "It's most fun when I can tell there are things he's been wanting to tell me or talk about," Matt says.

Trinidad has never had it easy, and now as he leaves high school, heading off towards his future, there will be more hurdles to overcome. "I have a greater appreciation for that whole 'it takes a village' thing," Matt admits. Between teachers, friends' parents, and his Big Brother watching out for him, Trinidad can look forward to college knowing he'll have his village behind him every step of the way.
