Just Being a Friend

Time is absolutely flying for Oakland match Josh and Domenico. “He grows up so fast!” Big Brother Josh exclaims. Matched since the now-teenage Domenico was in 6th grade, Josh sometimes finds it “hard to believe that we’ve been hanging out that long. His middle school graduation snuck up on me.”

It’s easy to see why their days together pass quickly. With both of them having a background in arts and a passion for sports, Josh and Domenico had much to talk about. “He knows so much about baseball,” Josh tells us. “Every game he wows me with some bit of history or trivia—usually it is about teams and players from before I was born!”

It’s not just Domenico’s wealth of trivia knowledge that surprises Josh, it’s how sincere and kind he is. Like old friends, they share moments of celebration and support each other during the hard times. “He came to visit me in the hospital, that meant a lot to me.” Josh recalls. Domenico also finds small ways to show how much he cares for his Big Brother. On a day at the batting cages, Domenico reminded Josh of his hometown by painting one his own batting helmets to look like Josh’s favorite MLB team.

Despite Josh’s busy schedule and Domenico’s school and sports responsibilities, they find it easy to spend meaningful time with each other. “Being present, being available—I’ve learned that goes a long way,” Josh tells us. “Some of the simplest things we did, or even the shortest times we’ve spent together, have been what he remembers or talks about with his friends the most. It’s nice to know that I don’t need to be the coolest person in his world to have an impact or be a friend.”
