Bridging the Generation Gap

Kristen recognized a lot of her younger self in her new Little Sister Jaeda. Shy as a child, Kristen was fortunate to have good role models. Her mentors helped her succeed, and now she was looking for a way to pay it forward.

Jaeda, initially reserved at their first match meeting, perked up immediately when they started to discuss where they would go their first outing. Soon, many more outings followed. The two did everything from roller-skating and attending Cal women's basketball games to just spending quality time together baking cookies or having a competitive face-off on Wii Sports. “We have those sibling rivalry moments,” Kristen tells us.

Like a true Little Sister, Jaeda keeps her Big informed about the latest and greatest pop culture references and new phrases Kristen may not have known. “I just learned ‘foams’ = shoes,” Kristen says. “It’s cool to understand a different generation.”

Kristen has gotten so much more out of this than new words to add to her vocabulary. She tells us, “your investment of time into someone else can have far-reaching effects—maybe your Little goes on to become a mentor for others, or applies a lesson that you imparted to someone else. It adds value to your life and that of your Little.”

Perhaps reflecting on all the laughter and fun they’ve shared on their outings, she adds, “...and being a Big Sister is a great way to stay young.”
