Holiday Party Fun!
Sunday, December 10th, 2017 was the first Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area Big Holiday Party for Littles for some of our Bigs and Littles, but for many more this annual tradition has spanned numerous years of a match. Hosted at the San Francisco Elks Lodge for decades, this immensely generous gesture gives us the opportunity to celebrate in style while focusing precious resources towards Bay Area children and families for the holidays.
It’s heart warming to see Bigs and Littles together, with each year marked by holiday festivities. Matches like Big Brother Brandon and Little Brother Devin (pictured) who’ve been attending the Holiday Party for the past five years illustrate the power of mentorship and the joy that comes from this special bond, continuing to grow and strengthen over time.
In addition to bringing together individual matches, this event is a special way to connect as a community. “Being with our matches for the holidays makes it feel like we are one big family” says CEO Dawn Kruger. With over 100 children in attendance, they were joined by family, Bigs and staff. Everyone was invited to enjoy the Elks' catered food and refreshments, take silly holiday sweater and accessory inspired pictures, and play tried-and-true games like checkers and bingo.
Every child received gifts from the Toy Drive, resulting in Santa sized bags of toys and gift cards. Santa himself, along with Mrs. Claus and some Elves, visited for most of the day, taking special requests, as well. Special thanks to the Elks and a dedicated team of volunteers from the National Charity League of Walnut Creek, as well as local companies like Comcast, PwC, and Miller's ATA Blackbelt Academy for all of the generous donations.
No child left empty-handed and most left with a smile on their face. When asked what she was most thankful for, Little Sister Davina hugged her new Dory doll and said thoughtfully “everybody’s here.” We agree! Being together and giving to others is truly the highlight of the holiday season.
