Manager, Marketing & Communications

Overview:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area is a dynamic mentoring agency that provides Bay Area youth with professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships. We are currently searching for a creative and highly organized Manager, Marketing & Communications to strategically and effectively deliver clear, consistent, and timely communications to the organization’s external stakeholders. The ideal candidate will excel at working cross-functionally, writing content with a strong background in social media, and managing a successful unified communications calendar. The Manager will be responsible for executing and managing the communications strategy of BBBSBA with the three-fold priorities of enhancing overall brand awareness, recruitment of volunteer mentors and eligible youth, and supporting the annual fund development goal. This position will support the team with content creation and editing, outreach, social media, website management, web presence, and collaborating with the BBBSBA team in furthering the message of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area. The Manager, Marketing & Communications will have the opportunity to collaborate with and support agency leadership, and will assist with all aspects of marketing as outlined in the Job Responsibilities below. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the VP of Development, serve as a key team member involved in strategizing and carrying out communication needs for BBBSBA programming and fundraising efforts as well as overall brand awareness.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Program, Partnerships and Development staff to create and manage a unified annual marketing and communications plan to promote programming and fundraising initiatives.
  • Maintain consistency of brand and messaging in all materials in line with overall strategic programmatic and fundraising goals of BBBSBA.

OUTREACH

Newsletters, Email Marketing and Social Media

  • Research and write content for email marketing including agency newsletters, solicitations, program updates, and event-related communications
  • Design and distribution of email marketing, including design and technical support for program and fundraising-related communications
  • Serve as the agency’s social media leader, consistently generating and posting accurate and inspiring content that positively and authentically represents BBBSBA
  • Strategically deploy paid social media for specific, targeted campaigns
    Track and present social analytics and KPIs (likes/engagement/top posts/conversions to successful volunteer sign-ups and donations)
  • Create and drive communications calendar on an annual, monthly and weekly basis including but not limited to: email marketing, blog and social media
  • Conduct analysis of community engagement in line with BBBSBA to contribute to strategic discussion around fundraising and marketing strategies

Public Relations Support

  • Research and develop media lists for outreach
  • Research award opportunities and support CEO in gathering information for nomination packets
  • Lead media relations for signature events and organizational news (Gala, program events, etc)
  • Monitor media hits and reporting
  • Support scheduling of speaking engagements, and assist partners in promoting events
  • Monitor and log incoming communication and media coverage.
  • Prepare all press materials and solicit exposure in media
  • Manage all advertising, marketing and social media promotional efforts.
  • Attend events to capture activities via photo and video
  • Create video productions for general purpose needs and specific events

CONTENT

Writing and Editing

  • Approach content creation with a project management mindset, continually collecting stories, updates, photo and other assets and organizing content to be deployed for the overall communications calendar
  • Create and manage content for all organization websites, blogs, social media accounts and collateral including brochures, fact sheets and reports.
  • Develop and edit content in line with BBBSBA’s messaging, and collaborate with staff on writing projects
  • Project manage and produce the Annual Report: collecting info and data, creating content, graphic design and print management.
  • Assist with writing scripts/speeches for events, PSAs, video promos, etc.

Agency Design Needs

  • Ensure that agency and departmental needs for graphic design are met on a timely basis either internally as in-house graphic designer and/or by working with contractors
  • Create collateral for campaigns, events and promotional initiatives
  • Complete graphic design projects using Adobe Suite: social media graphics, newsletter banners, invitations (recruitment/match events), recruitment flyers, advertisements
  • Reformatting/rebranding of existing collateral, assist with rewriting copy for collateral
  • Photo editing, organization, and preparation of print-ready files for all marketing collateral

Website and Web Presence

  • Consistently update organization website with dynamic, fresh content, blogs, and photography, regularly auditing content for accuracy and relevancy
  • Optimize web content for SEO
  • Provide regular updates including Google Analytics reports, traffic, and issues with any redirects
  • Create effective website landing pages upon request for specific campaigns and events and make updates to the website as needed: new hires, developing Mentor-specific pages, etc.
  • Project manage BBBSBA’s overall web presence, creating and maintaining an inventory of sites that require auditing and refreshing agency information as well as proactively seeking opportunities to list BBBSBA’s services on partner sites

 

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Monitor, track and order marketing collateral inventory, including swag, brochures, letterhead/envelopes, etc.
  • Maintain calendar of marketing deadlines, including advertising, awards and newsletters
  • Coordinate production deadlines/tracking for all marketing collateral requests
    Work with and manage vendors as needed, monitoring performance and evaluating partnerships
  • Other duties as assigned – including, but not limited to, assisting with match activities, strategic planning sessions, organizational events, and board and community meetings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field (marketing, advertising, journalism, communications, graphic design, English)
  • 3-5 years of professional related experience in marketing and/or communications/outreach

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • High level of project management skills and a demonstrated track record and ability to see a project through from vision to successful execution
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a wide variety of stakeholders including colleagues, volunteers, clients and partners
  • Exceptional written communication skills
  • Ability to write/edit compelling content and adapt content for marking to multiple audiences
  • Exemplary skill for proofreading content for clarity and accuracy
  • Experience with email marketing services (Mailchimp, Constant Contact or similar)
  • Expertise and experience with communicating via social media (Hootsuite, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google My Business, etc)
  • Meticulous attention to detail and deadlines
  • A high degree of organizational skills, including the ability to use project management systems and organize files and documents
  • Proactive, energetic, efficient and self-directed, with capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • An articulated belief in the mission of BBBS
  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of personal integrity and accountability.
  • Must pass a criminal background check
  • Basic design and photo editing skills using Canva or other tools

Preferred and nice-to-have skills:

  • Proficiency using InDesign and Photoshop and/or Illustrator
  • Basic knowledge of HTML and web design
  • Demonstrated experience with SEO

This is a permanent, full-time hybrid role based out of our Oakland office, with a great benefits package including health, vision and dental, flexible daytime hours, and occasional evening and weekend hours. We are currently working remotely. A hybrid working environment is available post-pandemic.
