On behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area, we sincerely hope that you and your loved ones are safe and remain healthy in this unprecedented time.
As we adjust to this new normal, we are all experiencing what it truly means to physically distance ourselves, and the resulting impacts. It is with disappointment that we must cancel our Ignite Potential Gala on April 24, where we come together to celebrate our Littles, our Bigs, and our community of supporters.
We extend our most heartfelt thanks to those individuals who have already supported BBBSBA this year, and to those who have reached out in recent weeks to offer continued support. We want to especially thank three of our supporters who have come together and offered to make an extraordinary matching gift of $100,000 to encourage others to support our Littles!
At BBBSBA, our work has not diminished amid this health crisis. Big Brothers Big Sisters has long delivered a mission that bridges a gap for youth through services, support, and guidance they do not currently receive in school or home. Now, during this crisis, with schools closed, we are uniquely positioned to provide the support and guidance youth need when they do not have access to their teachers and peers. It is critical to remember that the systemic issues facing the youth and communities we serve – economic, food, and housing instability – will amplify during this crisis. We need each other “socially” more than ever, especially because of our current ”physical” distance.
As Little, Devin says to his Big, Brandon in the video we are debuting with you today, “What you mean to me, Brandon, is a Big Brother I never had.” And Brandon is quick to add, “You’ll always have me.”
We are as determined as ever to provide mentors to the youth in our communities who are asking for one. We are working remotely to provide our youth with life-changing mentorship. Our process is still open to new applicants, and we are using technology in new ways to continue interviewing families and volunteers. As soon as we can gather face-to-face again, we will have new “Matches” queued up, ready to meet and start their journey together!
Our work to match and steward these critical mentoring relationships continues. We are now asking you to help us make up for the vital funds we would typically have raised at the Gala, to ensure we can maintain our staff and support the Bigs and Littles who count on us. We ask you to consider making as generous a gift as you can to activate the challenge match of $100,000 put forth by a small group of our most dedicated supporters. We appreciate every contribution at any level – together, we will ensure that every child has someone who is there just for them, to provide stability in this time of crisis and help them realize their potential.
Thank you for being a part of the BBBSBA family and for your ongoing support. Together, we are defenders of potential!
