The pandemic hit everyone hard, but for Michael, a teenager from the Tenderloin district in San Francisco, it threatened to diminish his spark. He stopped drawing and felt demotivated until his Big Conor checked in and brought him outside to hang out.
“Going out with Conor during the pandemic really helped me get back out there.” –Michael, Little Brother.
Conor, a former PE teacher and current Parks & Rec employee, didn’t just play sports with Michael – he noticed Michael’s quiet yet determined attitude about the arts. Conor, using his own job knowledge, enrolled Michael in free ceramics and figure drawing classes, giving him the tools to get better.
But it wasn’t just about the art, it was about the career path that artistry could take Michael. Big Conor took Michael to different museums, including the SFMOMA and the Asian Art Museum.
They also bonded over a shared love of filmmaking, another type of art that Conor himself related to. Michael, alongside his friends, were even featured in one of Conor’s short films.
Not only did Conor foster Michael’s interests, but he created experiences that opened the possibilities for different careers. Conor took Michael to the Google offices where his wife worked, showing that creativity flowed in a variety of spaces, even in the corporate world.
When it came time to apply for college, Michael was filled with a newfound sense of confidence because of Conor’s support. His passion for artistry was reignited, and through the Big Futures program, he pursued a scholarship to his dream college.
“Because of the Big Futures program, I was able to obtain a scholarship to the California College of the Arts, which was my dream school!” –Michael, Little Brother.
Conor’s consistent support proved invaluable as Michael prepared for college. Additionally, as a participant in our Big Futures program, Michael received specialized guidance on his essays and scholarships, helping him get accepted to his dream school.
While the dynamic has shifted over time, the mentorship that Conor provided has blossomed into a cherished friendship. Their relationship is closer than ever, as they both feel they can treat each other like family.
“Conor’s basically like family to me. Any important event I have, he’s the first person my mom asks about!” –Michael, Little Brother.
Conor and Michael’s story showcases the power of mentorship – having someone who’s there to support and foster the potential of a young person.
