Stress is common for many students, but it can become especially overwhelming when they feel isolated or unsure of themselves. Many young people feel out of place as they grapple with feelings of anxiety. From looming deadlines to navigating new social environments, the pressure starts to mount.

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area, we believe that positive mentorship is a powerful tool for alleviating this stress and helping students thrive. As stress and self-doubt often coincide, student success relies on having a steady voice of reassurance. Our volunteer mentors, or “Bigs”, provide a sense of belonging and act as emotional anchors that reassure youth and make all the difference.

The Power of Connection

Research has shown that a sense of belonging is key to student success. Students’ stress can often worsen when they feel they don’t belong or are disconnected. This feeling is closely linked with “imposter syndrome”, in which students worry they don’t truly belong in an academic environment.

Mentorship helps students overcome this feeling of disconnect. The simple act of being present and available provides youth with reassurance, especially when facing challenges like academic setbacks. Being able to talk to someone alleviates the feeling of isolation, and reaffirms student struggles. By sharing their own experiences and normalizing struggles, mentors can reassure young people that their feelings are valid and that they do belong.

Mentorship That Helps Build Resilience

Having a Big can counteract feelings of stress and anxiety. Bigs provide safe, non-judgmental spaces for young people to share their thoughts and feelings. Beyond a listening ear, Bigs can also provide practical strategies for managing stress. A few strategies that mentors can provide include:

  • Time management skills: Helping students create realistic schedules and prioritize tasks.
  • Mindfulness practices: Introducing techniques like deep breathing or meditation to promote calmness.
  • Problem-solving strategies: Guiding students step-by-step through challenges, fostering a sense of control over their circumstances.

In addition to these tools, mentors serve as trusted friends by offering perspective and encouragement. They can help students reframe challenges and focus on strengths and achievements. Developing these habits boosts self-esteem and resilience, essential for navigating the ups and downs of student life.

Fostering Belonging in a Stressful World

A consistent theme in research is that a sense of belonging is key to reducing student stress. Students often note that personalized support and a stronger sense of community is needed to succeed.

Mentorship answers that call. It provides personalized, one-on-one support that can help young people’s academic, emotional, and social lives. When needed, mentors can help students and families access resources, like mental health services, college prep, and much more. Our Big Community page provides mentors with a hub of resources that are useful for helping youth through stressful times.

By reassuring students that they belong, that they are capable, and that they have someone who cares about their success, mentors help turn self-doubt into belief.

Be the Voice They Need to Hear

If you’ve ever had a mentor, or wished you had one, you already know how important having that connection can be. And while mentorship isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about showing up, listening, and reminding a young person that they’re not alone in how they feel.

You can be that person by volunteering with us today! Help a young person build their confidence, and create a sense of belonging.
