In the Bay Area, we talk about community in terms of neighborhoods, tech ecosystems, and cultural hubs. But at its core, a community is defined by how we’re able to show up for one another, especially how we show up for our youth.
Mentorship is more than just a feel-good activity; it’s the cornerstone of a resilient society. It provides the foundation that connects potential to opportunity.
84% of young people have said that mentorship introduced them to possibilities they never would’ve thought possible. Despite this, however, 40% of today’s young people still grow up without a mentor.
Closing out the year and looking into the future, here are three high-impact ways to help us bridge that gap right here in the Bay Area.
1. Volunteer: Be the Spark That Ignites Their Confidence
One way that you can change a life is by becoming a Big. You don’t have to be a superhero or have a PhD. You just need to be a caring, consistent presence for a Little.
The data on this is clear. 81% of youth report feeling more confident in making their decisions about school, work, and life thanks to mentorship. 65% of youth state that the conversation they had with a mentor shifted their career path entirely.
When you volunteer, you’re not just hanging out; you’re expanding a child’s worldview. You’re providing proof to them that they matter.
2. Enroll: Connect a Family to Resources
Do you know a Bay Area family who wants some extra support for their child? Maybe a neighbor, a colleague, or even a friend whose child could benefit from an extra layer of adult support.
Mentorship can be a powerful tool for educational success. 83% of youth agree that mentors help connect classroom learning with real-world success. In fact, Littles in our program are 20% more likely to enroll in college than their peers.
If you know of a young person with big dreams, encourage their parent guardians to explore our programs. Together, we’re here to help build a village of support for them.
3. Donate: Invest in the Foundation of Connection
What does a donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area provide? The answer is safety and support for our Matches.
Effective mentoring relationships require professional oversight. Our team ensures every child is safe, every volunteer is vetted, and every Match has the resources to thrive. Your financial support allows us to create and sustain more of these Matches.
By donating, you’re directly addressing the mentoring gap. You’re helping us build a community where every child feels seen, heard, and empowered.
The Bottom Line
Mentorship builds resilience. It creates stronger mental health, deeper connections, and a sense of belonging that ripples out from the child to their family, and eventually, to the whole community.
This December, help us build a better future for the Bay Area. Whether you volunteer your time, refer a family, or invest in us, you’ll be helping to empower the potential of young people.
