In a world where many face stigma, discrimination, and rejection, we believe that every young person deserves to feel seen, safe, and supported. For LGBTQ+ youth, mentorship can be a powerful tool for developing resilience, cultivating affirmation, and creating a sense of belonging.
Why LGBTQ+ Youth Need Mentors
LGBTQ+ youth are more likely than their peers to experience mental health challenges, family rejection, and social isolation. For example, LGBTQ+ youth who lack affirming family support are three times more likely to attempt suicide than those with supportive families (The Trevor Project, 2024).
But the good news is, supportive mentorship can change their trajectory.
The research shows that mentoring relationships, especially those that affirm LGBTQ+ identities, offer emotional, interpersonal, and informational support which protects youth from risks associated with stigma and victimization (MENTOR National, 2023).
What Effective Mentors Can Do
The most impactful mentors take approaches that affirm LGBTQ+ identities and experiences. Here’s how mentors can make a difference:
1. Create Safe and Affirming Spaces
LGBTQ+ youth experience better mental health when they feel a sense of belonging and affirmation from the communities around them. This is often built through empathetic, consistent support from mentors and role models (InfoAboutKids.org, 2023).
2. Offer Emotional and Informational Support
Mentors who are understanding of the unique stressors that LGBTQ+ youth face, such as coming out, discrimination, or family rejection, can offer affirming guidance that strengthens a young person’s sense of identity and confidence.
3. Model Positive Futures
LGBTQ+ youth who have access to older, adult LGBTQ+ role models report a higher level of life purpose, linked to a reduction in suicidal ideation, self-harm, and depression symptoms (The Trevor Project, 2024).
4. Act as Advocates
Mentors can help LGBTQ+ youth navigate hostile and non-affirming environments—not only as an ally, but as an advocate to provide a buffer against social stigma and foster resilience in the youth (MENTOR National, 2023).
Our program serves to connect youth with mentors that match their needs. For LGBTQ+ youth, it’s especially important to have a strong supporter who can be a consistent presence in their lives.
The Power of Belonging
A sense of belonging is more than simply being accepted—it’s about being celebrated for who you are.
According to Minority Stress Theory, LGBTQ+ youth face increased risks when they experience rejection, but they build resilience when they are affirmed and supported by a community (InfoAboutKids.org, 2023).
Through consistent, affirming mentoring relationships, LGBTQ+ youth develop:
- Higher self-confidence and self-esteem
- Improved psychological functioning
- Better coping and problem-solving skills
- A deeper sense of life purpose and future orientation
Real Impact, Real Lives
Our program outcomes show firsthand how fruitful having a mentor can be for young people. One of our Bigs from an LGBTQ+-identifying match shared with us:
“My Little and I have talked about our different sexualities and have both learned from one another. Because of this, they know that they can ask me pretty much anything and I’ll be honest with them.“
That’s the power of mentorship.
