At Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area, we’ve witnessed the change that mentorship brings into the lives of our matches. Beyond giving advice or creating connections, it’s about being a consistent, trusted presence in a young person’s life. Every day, we see our mentors show up for their Littles, and the results are powerful. The data proves it: mentorship helps youth stay on the right path, gain confidence, and believe in their own potential.
Here are three key factors that show just how much mentorship matters.
1. Healthy Behaviors and Choices: Mentorship Helps Youth Avoid Risky Behaviors
One of the most significant ways mentorship makes a difference is by helping young people steer clear of risky behaviors. The role of a mentor extends beyond support, as mentors can guide their mentees toward making positive choices in their lives.
89% of Littles in our program improved their ability to avoid risky behaviors such as substance use, bullying, and involvement in the justice system. This is a direct result of the consistency, care, and positive influence that our mentors provide. When young people have someone in their corner, they’re more likely to make decisions that promote their well-being.
Mentorship provides a stable presence that can help young people resist negative influences and gives them the tools to navigate challenges in healthier ways. This guidance equips them with the confidence to focus on making choices that set them up for a better, brighter future.
2. Mental Health: Mentorship Fosters Emotional Resilience and Well-Being
Adolescence can be especially difficult, filled with emotional challenges. Fortunately, mentorship plays a critical role in supporting mental health during this pivotal time.
85% of Littles involved in our program reported improvements in emotional regulation, coping skills, and a significant reduction in symptoms of depression. Having a mentor means having someone to confide in, someone who can listen without judgement and offer guidance when it’s needed most. A mentorship relationship is a vital source of emotional stability, helping youth better understand and manage their feelings.
Mentorship offers young people a safe space to talk about their struggles, from school stress and family issues to social challenges. Knowing there’s a consistent, trustworthy adult to turn to can be a powerful tool in building emotional resilience. Mentors can model healthy ways of handling life’s ups and downs. This kind of emotional support helps youth feel more secure and empowered to face whatever comes their way.
3. Academics: Mentorship Boosts Academic Outlook and Motivation
Education plays an important role in shaping the future of youth, and mentors serve to boost academic outlook and motivation. We recognize that mentorship has had a measurable impact on academic performance, as youth who are paired with mentors perform better in school, feel more motivated, and are more likely to pursue higher education.
At BBBSBA, 94% of our Littles have reported increased educational expectations, and 96% of our high school seniors have graduated. This reflects the power that mentorship has in encouraging and inspiring young people to succeed academically. Mentors help students become more receptive to new ideas, including expanding their expectations beyond what they ever thought possible before. Youth with mentors are able to build the self-confidence they need to do well in school.
As stable and consistent support, mentors can steer youth in the right direction. Youth with mentors are more likely to attend school regularly, as 55% are less likely than their peers to skip school. There’s a sense of accountability, combined with encouragement from their trusted mentor, that drives them to succeed beyond their original expectations.
Beyond One-to-One: The Ripple Effect of Mentorship
Although mentoring relationships are between a mentor and mentee, the effect reaches beyond the relationship itself. The effect extends to families, communities, and beyond. The consistency, support, and encouragement provides stability, which can prove essential to youth who face challenges at home, school, or in their communities.
Mentors provide space for young people to explore, make mistakes, and grow into confident, capable individuals. This helps them unlock their full potential and lead them to success. Mentors, in turn, experience their own personal growth, fulfillment, and the reward of knowing they’ve made a difference in someone else’s life.
With over 500 youth served in 2025, BBBSBA is proud to be part of creating a brighter future for young people in our community. We’ve set out to make a difference, together.
